GudangAda Solusi is a store management app for FMCG wholesalers and retailers. It's used for merchants to manage their stores, from stock management, transaction management to generate report (sales & financial report). It's available on Android and web-based.
Our team had initiatives to improve the current app for better user experience. We found the gap in adding stock journey that embarked opportunities for us to solve the problems and at the same time carry out our unique selling point.
Existing Search Behavior (App & Web)
Users need to scroll to find the specific product or specify the keyword to get the desired result.
FMCG wholesalers and retailers generally have dozens to hundreds of inventory in their store. The number of inventory stock changes dynamically depending on their sales. Once the stock is running low, they need to add the stock immediately before customers come to purchase the item. They need to be swift yet precise in adding stock in their inventory. Not to mention, they also need to add new item that hasn't been sold in their store before if any new product variant from supplier. Adding and updating stock become their day-to-day activity.
The existing GudangAda Solusi had provided the ability to manage inventory stock, yet it wasn't fast enough for users, especially when many items need to be restocked and added. When merchants need to search a specific product variant from dozens or even hundreds, it can be time-consuming.
How might we make the inventory search experience hassle-free, fast, and show the correct result for merchants?
As their task is repetitive and runs on daily basis for some users, we made sure the improvement was convenient and easy to learn. We took quite an approach from the technical side likewise to help users gain a seamless experience. We decided an additional barcode scanner device was needed to accomplish the task. Barcode scanner is a fast and reliable device. Most wholesalers already had this device in store as they used it when creating a transaction for customers. Thus, some users would have been familiar with it.
While a barcode scanner device was needed for web users, app users wouldn't need additional devices. The camera on smartphone devices act as barcode scanner. It would capture and detect the barcode.
The design phase was slightly challenging for me. We wanted to make barcode scan as an alternative feature to add inventory other than the manual search by keyword. At the same time, the feature also needed to be well-highlighted for users to notice and use it.

Adding inventory can be 3x faster
Adding numerous inventory at once has never been this fast. Everyday work is now easier and more efficient.

Feature highlight
The new barcode scan feature won't be missed. It will be highlighted in the first time access.

Scan through camera
For app users, they can scan product barcode through smartphone camera. In case of bad lighting, flashlight feature is available to use.

Search barcode number
In case of problem with the device camera, users have the option to search the product by barcode number.
